The U.S. Department of Energy and the North Carolina Clean Energy Technology Center are excited to announce that a new, modernized DSIRE is under construction. The new version of DSIRE will offer significant improvements over the current version, including expanded data accessibility and an array of new tools for site users. The new DSIRE site will be available in December 2014. Staff are currently working hard on the new version of DSIRE but are also maintaining the content of the current version of DSIRE. Sales Tax Exemption for Energy-Efficient Products (Sales Tax Holiday)

NOTE: Sale Tax holiday for the year 2014 is scheduled to begin at 12am on Friday, October 10 and end at midnight on Monday, Oct 13.

Virginia allows a four-day sales tax* exemption for dishwashers, clothes washers, air conditioners, ceiling fans, compact fluorescent light bulbs, dehumidifiers, and refrigerators that meet federal ENERGY STAR standards. Certain EPA "Watersense" products may also qualify.

To qualify for the incentive, the products must

  • Meet or exceed the federal ENERGY STAR or EPA’s Watersense standard
  • Be $2,500 or less per product
  • Be purchased for noncommercial or personal use.

Beginning in 2007, 100% exemption from the state sales and use tax applies to sales occurring during the four-day period that commencing annually on the Friday before the second Monday in October and ends at midnight on the second Monday in October.

*Total sales tax in VA is 6%.
