Summary:
The Sustainable Energy Fund (SEF) promotes and invests in energy efficiency and renewable energy projects, and energy education initiatives. Financial incentives are offered as loans to promote clean energy technologies and for projects where energy savings are measurable.
SEF has developed an energy education program, Sustainable Scholars that brings together educators, college students, policy makers, business professionals and entrepreneurs for a week-long conference and training in renewable technologies, and related issues. The mission of this program is to cultivate a comprehensive understanding of and passion for sustainable energy technologies, economics, and public policy so that attendees can make the informed decisions necessary to provide the energy needed today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. For information, please visit www.sustainbleenergyconference.com.
The SEF was founded in November 1999 as a result of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission electric utility restructuring proceedings. The SEF was a key component of the joint settlement with PPL, Inc. (now PPL Electric Utilities Corporation) and the PUC. The fund has collected slightly more than $25 million since opening through a rate surcharge on PPL ratepayers. The surcharge expired and was not renewed at the end of 2006. See DSIRE's summary of Pennsylvania's Public Benefits Funds for more information.
