Summary:
Much of the information presented in this summary is drawn from the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Building Energy Codes Program and the Building Codes Assistance Project (BCAP). For more detailed information about building energy codes, visit the DOE and BCAP websites.
The Florida Building Commission (FBC) is directed to adopt, revise, update, and maintain the Florida Building Code in accordance with Chapter 120 of the state statutes. The code is mandatory throughout the state and need not be adopted by a local government to be applicable at the local level. An online copy of the Florida State Energy Code is available at the FBC's Building Codes website.
In June 2008, Florida enacted HB 697, which outlined the state legislature's mandates to improve the energy performance of Florida's infrastructure. To meet the state's ambitious energy efficiency goals, the Florida Building Commission shall select the most current version of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) as a foundation code; however, the IECC will be modified by the commission to maintain the efficiencies of the Florida Energy Efficiency Code for Building Construction. The 2010 Florida Building Code was adopted in 2011 and is based on 2009 IECC.
