Summary:
The Arizona Registrar of Contractors does not offer a general solar contractor license, but the state's C11/L11 electrical license covers solar electric installations. C11 licenses are required for electrical work on residential property and L11 licenses apply to commercial installations. Contractors can also acquire a K11 license to work on both residential and commercial installations.
The Arizona Registrar of Contractors does have a specific solar thermal contractor license requiring contractors who install, alter or repair a "solar device" have a solar contractors license. There is a solar license for residential (C37) and commercial (L77, L78) systems, as well as a license for both (K77, K78).
A "solar device" is defined as "means a device for the use and application of solar energy incidental to:
(a) Boilers, steamfitting and process piping.
(b) Plumbing.
(c) Air conditioning or comfort heating and cooling systems.
(d) Hot water systems for residences and swimming pools.
(e) Solar daylighting by a device as defined in section 44-1761."
All contractors who work with solar energy systems must have four years of relevant work experience and must pass an exam in order to receive a license in Arizona. The following licensing exams include sections on solar applications: air conditioning and refrigeration, boilers, steamfitting and process piping, swimming pools, and general plumbing.
